.......information from The Music Effect is found in the discussion of physiological entrainment, which encompasses various physiological and behavioral responses that respond to rhythmic changes in our environment. The phenomenon of entrainment is well-known to all of us, even if we are not consciously aware of it, from the driver matching the rhythm of other automobiles on road or the passenger falling asleep from the consistent and rhythmic movement of the automobile. Of course, for the hypnosis professional the importance is how we are actually utilizing entrainment in a formal hypnotic induction, which usually involves focusing on a specific point or following the rhythm of the therapist's voice that gradually induce the deep sense of relaxation that leads to the trance state. The authors focus on five different types of physiological entrainment beginning with a detailed and extremely engaging description of the neurological processes involved in entrainment through the nervous system.

The other sections of the book discuss the sensory processing of music from the internal functioning of the auditory system to the processing of pitch, rhythm, and timbre. Various music therapy case examples are utilized throughout the book, and their progress in treatment is followed. There is an interesting discussion of how a fear or panic reaction can be lessened and eventually eliminated by adjusting the set points of homeostatic response to the environment.

All in all, this is a fascinating book that covers an array of phenomena. It is well written and thoroughly referenced. For those who make the reading effort, your fund of knowledge will certainly be increased, and perhaps you will find yourself looking at your clinical and personal environment from a new frame of reference.

Suffice it to say that this week was not conducive or supportive of general investor confidence on Wall Street. The news was, however, supportive for the two most popular precious metals, both of which tested technical support levels and support won the contest.
With Barack Obama now the apparent democratic nominee for president, fear of much higher income and capital gains taxes to come in 2009 showed up in earnest. Tax avoidance selling may escalate and remains one of the headwinds stock markets in the U.S. must deal with between now and at least November.
Long-term profits from capital gains are currently subject to a 15% rake by Uncle Sam. As mentioned before in this report, the fear on the street is that income and capital gains tax rates are going up big if the Dem-Nom actually becomes POTUS (president of the United States). Investment counsellors, fund and portfolio managers and individual investors probably don’t fear the tax increase itself as much as they fear the FEAR that kind of thing causes in financial markets.
The markets won’t be selling off so much because of the perception that income taxes will be going higher in 2009. That’s bad news, but not what money managers fear. They will be selling off because of the perception that other people will be selling because of that. Because of the fear that the markets will go much lower because of it. That fear is the kind that feeds on itself. As it does it could perversely play right into the camp of the future, socialist-leaning tax raisers.

An open letter to Phillip Yeo and all who are in the US utilizing US public funds to provide research monies to Stem Cell Research, and those within the US who fake public and run private for profit.

This action is similar to that in the past of a king. He listened to a couple of hustlers who convinced him that he needed a change of clothing. They "fashioned" the clothes and told him he looked good. Meantime they told him to fire his other advisors and supress the press who would have taken pictures and allowed for other people to tell him he was naked and stinky in rebellion. Everyone in the domain was afraid to tell the king within the court for fear of death, accept a younger guy in the kingdom as the king in pride paraded around. I am that young at heart guy .

It is by God’s grace that I again report of my invention of a database in Immunology and revelation that there are immunologic etiologies to all diseases. There have been major experiments performed and therapies fashioned including monoclonal antibodies to TNF. The theory is now amended to include one that does not vary from the existing body of evidence that exists in the INDEX MEDICUS, to explain the cell to blastocyst to differentiation mystery that he is seeking. Australian scientists unravel Leukaemia link
Scientists have unravelled the structure of a cell signalling receptor in the blood control system which when damaged is responsible for diseases such as leukaemia. Their discovery helps to explain, for the first time, how this receptor is activated and will form the springboard for the development of new treatments.
The findings, published on 8 August in the prestigious science journal, Cell, are the result of an interstate collaboration between a team of scientists led by Professor Michael Parker, St Vincent’s Institute (SVI), Melbourne and Professor Angel Lopez, Hanson Institute at the Institute of Medical and Veterinary Science, Adelaide.
Using leading edge technology that allows scientists to view minute parts of cells, the scientists have developed the first 3D image of the receptor’s structure and will use the unique knowledge it provides to find drugs to modify its action and control diseases such as Leukaemia and asthma.
Professor Lopez said: “Leukaemia is a type of cancer where an excessive number of malfunctioning white blood cells are produced. We have established the structure of a receptor that controls the actions of a blood-forming regulator called GM-CSF.”
He continued: “GM-CSF has been of interest to researchers and clinicians for many years now because its ‘controller’ or ‘receptor’, found on the surface of blood cells, is critical in regulating their many functions. In leukaemia some of the signals coming from the “receptor” are abnormal causing the blood cells to grow uncontrollably, malfunction or dangerously persist past their use-by-date.” Professor Parker said: “Because our discovery shows precisely what the receptor looks like and also how it works, we can now begin to design new drugs to rein in the deadly abnormal blood cells. At the moment many leukaemias are treated with chemotherapy that destroys the diseased blood cells and bone marrow as well as normal cells. We hope that this discovery will lead to targeted therapies, more specific to the malfunctioning cells seen in diseases such as leukaemia.”

TUMOR NECROSIS FACTOR-BRAIN FUNCTION, TNF-ALTZHEIMER'S

TNF is a critical component of the brain's immune system which finely regulates the transmission of neural impulses between brain cells. The lead author of this study, Edward Tobinick MD(6), hypothesized that in Alzheimer's and related forms of dementia, such as primary progressive aphasia (PPA), elevated levels of TNF interfere with brain function, and could respond to treatment with perispinal etanercept. Rapid improvement in impaired speech, beginning within minutes, seems to be a unique effect of perispinal etanercept, and illustrates the existence of rapidly reversible TNF-dependent brain mechanisms in Alzheimer's disease and primary progressive aphasia. Rapid improvement in cognition in patients with Alzheimer's following perispinal etanercept has also been recently reported (3,4,5). These rapid effects are thought to be due to TNF's novel role as a gliotransmitter regulating synaptic transmission (communication between brain cells), a physiologic function of TNF only recently recognized.

Role in Sexual Response

Arginase II is coexpressed with NO synthase in smooth muscle tissue, such as the muscle in the genitals of both men and women. The contraction and relaxation of these muscles has been attributed to nitric oxide (NO) synthase, which causes rapid relaxation of smooth muscle tissue and facilitates engorgement of tissue necessary for normal sexual response. However, since NO synthase and arginase compete for the same substrate (L-arginine), over-expressed arginase can affect NO synthase activity and NO-dependent smooth muscle relaxation by depleting the substrate pool of L-arginine that would otherwise be available to NO synthase. In contrast, inhibiting arginase with ABH or other boronic acid inhibitors will maintain normal cellular levels of arginine, thus allowing for normal muscle relaxation and sexual response.

Recent studies have implicated arginase as a controlling factor in both male erectile function and female sexual arousal, and is therefore a potential target for treatment of sexual dysfunction in both sexes. Additionally, supplementing the diet with additional L-arginine will decrease the amount of competition between arginase and NO synthase by providing extra substrate for each enzyme

Cells communicate by passing small, disposable messages to one another. Some of these messengers travel to distant parts of the body through the blood, others simply diffuse over to a neighboring cell. Then, another cell picks the message up and reads it. Thousands of these messages are used in the human body. Some familiar examples include adrenaline, which controls the level of excitement, glucagon, which carries messages about blood sugar levels, histamine, which signals tissue damage, and dopamine, which relays messages in the nervous system.

Reading the Mail
In many cases, these molecular messengers never get inside cells. Instead, the message is picked up by a receptor on the cell surface and the signal is then passed from outside to inside through a chain of signaling molecules. G proteins, such as the one shown here from PDB entry 1gg2, form the central link in this chain of communication. The G protein system is the most common method of signaling in our cells. Thousands of G-protein-coupled receptors have been found on our cells, each waiting for its own particular messenger. Some recognize hormones and make changes in the level of metabolism. Others are used in the nervous system to transmit nerve signals. Our sense of sight also relies on a G protein system that is sensitive to light, and a thousand different forms of these receptors, each recognizing the odor of a different molecule, control our sense of smell. They all share the combination of a receptor that receives a message and a G protein that delivers it inside the cell.

The "G" in G Proteins

G proteins are molecular switches that use GDP (colored purple here) to control their signaling cycle. When GDP is bound, as shown here, the G protein is inactive. To activate the protein, the GDP is replaced with GTP, the G protein will deliver its signal, as shown on the next page. G proteins come in many shapes and sizes. Most are used for cell signaling, but other types play an important role in other tasks, such as powering protein synthesis. The ones described here are termed heterotrimeric G proteins because they are composed of three different chains, denoted as alpha (tan), beta (blue), and gamma (green). The little red piece is a loop on the surface of the alpha subunit that is important in transmitting the signal.
Hugging the Membrane
These G proteins bind to the inner surface of the cell membrane, holding them close to their receptors. Several small lipids are attached to the protein chains (as seen at the upper right in the picture), which insert into the membrane and tether the protein there. However, don't try to find these little lipids in the crystal structure file, because they were removed to allow crystallization.
G Proteins Under Attack


The G protein system plays a central role in many signaling tasks, making it a sensitive target for drugs and toxins. Many of the drugs that are currently on the market, such as Claritin and Prozac, as well as a number of drugs of abuse, such as heroin, cocaine and marijuana, act at G-protein-coupled receptors in these signaling chains. Cholera bacteria make a toxin that attacks G proteins directly, by attaching a nucleoside group in a strategic place. This modification causes the G protein to be continually active. Among other things, this disrupts the normal controls on fluid balance in intestinal cells, and the infected person rapidly becomes dehydrated as water, sodium and chloride are lost. Relaying the Signal
G proteins relay their signal on the inside surface of the cell membrane. The process starts when a receptor binds to its proper hormone or neurotransmitter, such as adrenaline. This changes the shape of the receptor, and it binds to the inactive three-chain G protein inside. This causes the G protein to expel its GDP molecule and replace it with GTP. The GTP causes a small loop (shown here in red) to change shape, and the G protein falls into two pieces. The freed alpha subunit, with its bound GTP, then moves along the membrane until it finds the enzyme adenylyl cyclase. The little loop then binds to the enzyme and activates it. The activated adenylyl cyclase then produces lots of cyclic AMP, which spreads the signal through the cell. Eventually, the GTP in the active alpha subunit will break down into GDP, and the G protein will reform into its inactive, resting state. One major advantage of this approach is that it allows the signal to be amplified. In the signaling chain shown here, a single molecule of adrenaline can stimulate the production of many molecules of cyclic AMP. By incorporating an enzyme (like adenylyl cyclase) into the chain, a weak signal from outside the cell can be translated into a strong signal throughout the inside of the cell. When you go to look at these structures yourself, keep this in mind: structures are available at each stage of this interesting process, but you have to be willing to cobble together examples from a number of different signaling pathways. Four PDB structures were used in this picture: 1f88, 1got, 1cul, and 1tbg, from left to right. These aren't the exact proteins that respond to adrenaline, but they give an idea of what the signaling pathway is like.

Harrold Floyd "Tina" Brooks was born in Fayetteville, North Carolina. His father, David, played the piano and encouraged his eight children to study music. Of these, two became professionals: David, Jr. ("Bubba"), who went on to perform with Bill Doggett's combo [The Right Choice, Ichiban], and Tina. In 1944 the Brooks family moved to New York City, but Tina, who kept getting beaten up by street gangs in their new neighborhood, was sent back to Fayetteville for most of his high-school education, only returning to the metropolis for his senior year.
In 1950, Bubba was established as an R&B player, and Tina replaced him for parts of that year and the next in Sonny Thompson's band, making his recording debut with them for King Records. Other R&B gigs followed with Charles Brown, Joe Morris, and Amos Milburn, and in spring and summer of 1955, Tina also toured with Lionel Hampton's orchestra.
In 1956, Tina met the bebop trumpeter and composer Little Benny Harris at the Blue Morocco, a Bronx jazz club. Harris schooled him in modern jazz's complex and demanding structures. At the same time, Tina struck up a friendship with Elmo Hope, whose dark-hued, minor tunes may have influenced his style as a composer. With these two mentors, saxophonist Jimmy Lyons, and Oliver Beener (a trumpeter who became his closest friend), Tina gigged around the Bronx and jammed wherever he could.
In late 1957, Benny Harris introduced Alfred Lion of Blue Note Records to Tina's playing. Favorably impressed, Lion used Tina on two Jimmy Smith sessions (The Sermon, and Cool Blues with Lou Donaldson) and two led by Kenny Burrell (Blue Lights and On View at the Five Spot Cafe). In addition, Brooks cut a record of his own with Lee Morgan (Minor Move).
Through Lion, Tina also met tenor saxophonist Ike Quebec, who brought him and Freddie Hubbard together. Freddie used Tina on his first Blue Note record date (Open Sesame, recorded June 19, 1960). A week later, Tina cut another album, True Blue. Other sessions followed, with Jackie McLean (Jackie's Bag), and Freddie Redd (Shades of Redd, and The Connection for Felsted Records, Brook's only recording not on Blue Note), plus another two unreleased dates, (one under his own name, The Waiting Game and another for Freddie Redd, Redd's Blues).
By 1962, Brooks' career as a recording artist was over. Nonetheless, he continued to appear at Bronx jazz spots like the Blue Morocco, Freddie's Bar, and the 845 Club with Hope, Beener, and others. Heroin addiction--complete with spells in jail and in hospitals--limited his professional activity during the rest of his life. The official cause of his death in 1974 was kidney failure. He had been too ill to play for several years.
As with dozens of other jazz musicians, the word "under-rated" is unavoidable in connection with Tina Brooks. Even during his period of greatest visibility (1958--1961), Brooks was unnoticed by most jazz fans; and were it not for Mosaic co-producer Michael Cuscuna's belief in his work, he would be even less recognized today.

If a picture says a thousand words how much understanding can a moving picture generate as to training and what needs to be done NOW for the United States of America and its most valuable resource the YOUTH! There is no room for anything other than a class approach and cooperation against a common enemy-IGNORANCE

We need to learn Chinese also and look to see how they handle education! We also need to consider the war on Drugs and how it impacts the culture of the youth who will lead in the future....... or be lead, if there is no intervention now.
